House of WordsA Celebration of the Digital Resources for Teachers and Writers
All are welcome—readers, writers, teachers, neighbors, anyone with an interest. William Stafford Birthday Event Funded by the Lamb Foundation and Lewis & Clark College, the “House of Words” was a retreat for teachers held at Special Collections, Lewis & Clark College, in July 2009. Participants poured through William Stafford’s first two books—West of Your City (1960), and Traveling through the Dark (1962)—and developed classroom lessons K-12 for inviting students to write in the spirit of William Stafford’s work. This work was generously supported by Doug Erickson and Jeremy Skinner, of the Special Collections department at Lewis & Clark, and Paul Merchant, director of the William Stafford Archives there. When we gather Sunday evening at the Writers’ Dojo, we will do some writing together, and then take a virtual tour of the William Stafford Archives’ digital resources now available for teachers and writers. At the Dojo, we take off our shoes, share light refreshments, and tread the sacred ground of human exchange. This evening event will also be the culmination of the weekend workshop “Daily Writing in the Spirit of William Stafford,” to be taught by Kim Stafford at Lewis & Clark College, January 16-17, 9am-5pm. For details, or to register, please visit http://go.lclark.edu/nwi. For further information, please contact Jeffrey Selin (503-706-0509 | jeff at writersdojo.org) or Kim Stafford (krs at lclark.edu). Thanks to the Lamb Foundation, Special Collections at Lewis & Clark, local teachers in the House of Words project, and the Friends of William Stafford for making this event possible.
