Our Upcoming Events
Award-winning author Karen Karbo will offer a nuts-and-bolts workshop focusing on getting that memoir/novel/collection written and out into the world. We'll focus on developing productive writing habits, maintaining focus in the age of Twitter, and how to put one foot in front of the other when you'd rather curl up with your TiVo. Time: Eight Tuesdays, 7pm-9:30pm
Dojo editor, Kerry Cohen, reads from Loose Girl, a memoir of promiscuity now in paperback. Entertainment Weekly said, "Cohen's brutal honesty about her relentless request for companionship is refreshingly relatable." Loose Girl is Kerry Cohen's captivating memoir about her descent into promiscuity and how she gradually found her way toward real intimacy. Time: 7:30pm, Friday
For those in New York City at the end of this month, please join Dojo members and Web site contributors Melanie Thernstrom and Kristin Thiel. The event is being hosted by Indigo Editing & Publications, a Portland-based company that often works with the Dojo. New York writers Joseph Riippi, Victoria McCoy, and Ryan Davidson, past contributors to Indigo's Ink-Filled Page, will also read. Time: 7-9pm, Friday
We'll develop plot, character, scene, dialogue, and (gulp) revision techniques. Come with a manuscript in mind to work on or come ready to find your next great project. This workshop is for new and seasoned writers. Time: Five Thursdays, 7pm-9:30pm
Join the literary celebration here at the Writers' Dojo on Saturday, with many of our favorite literary artists and professionals. We have a full day of events to help raise funds for our new non-profit for free kids' writing classes here in North Portland. Time: 9am-6pm
When Robert Bly visited Portland, he read his own poetry, and also poems by a younger poet he admired named Jay Leeming. He's hailed by Li-Young Lee, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Garrison Keller (who read Leeming's "Man Writes Poem" on the air). Mr. Leeming's book "Dynamite On A China Plate" (The Backwaters Press) was The Reader's Choice Award winner in 2003. Time: 10am-4pm
Join author and journalist Daniel Bergner for a provocative discussion about erotic extremity. His new book, "The Other Side of Desire," has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, The Washington Post, O Magazine, Salon, Slate and others. Time: 7pm, Friday
