Memoir

A workshop in remembering story by story
with Kim Stafford

We will write fragments from memory, half-memory, enriched memory—and by writing, help these fragments to grow in the general direction of poems, essays, stories, or just the delicious glory of the rich fragment.

This workshop explores autobiography, biography, and life history, and the ways that individual lives are linked to broader cultural stories. Using the lenses of literature, folklore, personal story, and writing generated in class, participants examine how life stories emerge in families, with individuals, and at work.

Dates: Feb 18 — Mar 18, 2010
Time: Thursdays, 4-7pm (5 classes)
Cost: $250
Where: Writers’ Dojo
Note
: The third class, March 4, will be conducted on-line

The workshop will offer practice with writing, and reflection on the chapters in a life, and investigates how the practice of writing can deepen vocation. Students write in a learning community, and share works in progress. No assignments, only invitations. No grades, just murmurs of approval and glances of admiration.

Writing chapters from one’s life story can produce gifts for family, and an important record of community life. In this workshop, we will read short passages from a variety of voices reflecting on lessons learned from life encounters. We will use these passages as prompts for our own writing, leading to a gathering of short life chapters for further reflection and revision over time. No experience necessary, but a willing heart.
