Writing from the "I"Introducing three, one-day workshops to help move you through poetry, personal narrative and prose.
As writers, we begin with what we know, delve into our awareness and psyches to bring stories to the surface. Our Writing from the ‘I’ Series, the first of three series during our 2009/10 term, will help you cultivate a strong first-person voice, open doors into your personal history, and create arresting scenes and narratives across genres and forms.
Drawing from the personal in poetry with Shaindel Beers Beers’ first full-length poetry collection, A Brief History of Time, is steeped in personal narrative, internal musings, and the personal longings of a girl raised in a flat country. During her workshop, you’ll explore the voice that begs to cry out in your work, discuss ways to access and drive a strong, personal, reflective style throughout all of your writing, delve into personal history as poem prompts and much more. Meet Shaindel >
Casey Bush’s fiction, non-fiction and poetry relies heavily on strong narrative, whether writing in the first-person or calling upon personal history to create arresting third-person narratives. Through discussion and exercises, explore the importance of self-expression, communicating knowledge, writing as learning, and developing a distinctive voice. Bush will also impart his knowledge as an editor and publisher to help you break in to print and online publication. Meet Casey >
In writing Loose Girl, which Publisher’s Weekly describes as a “commendably honest” story of a lost childhood, Kerry Cohen navigated the tricky terrain between autobiography and memoir. During our memoir workshop, you’ll discover what it takes to turn your own life into prose by delving into the basic elements of memoir, including characterization of the self, building a story arc, writing scenes, and action/reflection.
